Salt + Snow is your one-stop-shop for an adventure-filled vacation

Surfing and skiing enthusiasts Kathy Thomas and Sara Zilkha have nine children between them and were often on the lookout for sports equipment for their families. With a dearth of trendy options (largely thanks to an offline, male-focused shopping model), the duo, who reside in New York and Colorado respectively, decided to launch their own e-commerce, called Salt + Snow, launched in late March. The market offers high-quality technical equipment for men, women and children that are also fashionable; it seeks to become a solution for those who have already spent long days shopping on multiple sites and not finding what they wanted.

“Most outdoor apparel shopping experiences are very centered around men buying for themselves. Companies such as DICK’S [Sporting Goods]REI, have product assortment, marketing and customer experience [that] don’t speak effectively to our target demographic,” Zilkha told TZR in an email. Thanks to Salt + Snow, women can find clothing that is both visually appealing and highly appropriate – whether it’s a wetsuit, ski layer or golf shirt – for them. themselves and for their families.

Shoppers can also gather in-depth information on everything from products to travel logistics via the Salt + Snow blog. “A key part of our value proposition is editorial content, reviews and research,” adds Zilkha. The founders intend to create a community of “wanderers”, or ambassadors of various places, who will produce shopping guides and provide advice on family activities in a given destination.

For now, Salt + Snow is starting small with a curated assortment of around 20 brands (though they plan to offer 40 by the end of 2022). There are many niche and emerging brands on the site, such as Alps & Meters, Anemos, Dinoski, L’Etoile Sport, Matuse and Revo mixed with better known brands like Cynthia Rowley.

The co-founders have hired Ashley Bryan to serve as chief operating officer (after stints at Net-a-Porter, Moda Operandi and Maisonette) while Brooke Gerschel, a former Ralph Lauren merchant, is the chief operating officer. Salt + Snow merchandising. Brooke Danielson, who previously held executive positions at vogue and Shape takes the reins at the head of marketing.
