JD Sports opens its largest store in the North East yet with its own treadmill for shoes

A ‘fun and unique shopping experience’ is being offered at a newly opened JD Sports store in Gateshead that focuses on high-tech innovation, including a conveyor belt to bring customers their shoes.

The goal of the new store at Metrocentre, according to the company, is to tap into the brand’s role in youth culture. Among its attractions for shoppers will no doubt be its scale – this latest addition to the mall is now JD Sports’ largest store in the northeast.

It opened in Platinum Mall on Saturday, showcasing a range of around 40 sports, fashion and outdoor brands, including Nike, Adidas and The North Face. And its fully automated shoe conveyor belt is a focal point.

During the rest of the week, the store is offering shoppers the chance to customize a pair of sneakers – bought in store – for free in its “customization station”. Adding to the atmosphere is an Ibiza-inspired soundtrack featuring local DJ and producer Jerome Price.

In keeping with the holiday mood, there’s also a competition, which runs until July 9: those who spend over £100 in the shop will have a chance to win a holiday for four at the famous Ibiza Rocks hotel as well as JD tickets. Pool party.

A spokesperson for JD Sports Fashion plc said: “We are proud to embrace the communities that shop with us and the culture that surrounds us, and this new Metrocentre store embodies that commitment.” Ben Cox, of Metrocentre’s lead asset manager Sovereign Centros, said it was “fantastic” to be able to unveil the “flagship” store in Gateshead.

“The store is expected to be the largest in the region, providing an enhanced destination for top brand streetwear and activewear,” he said. The new JD Sports is open daily from 9 a.m. (11 a.m. Sunday) to 9 p.m. weekdays; 7 p.m. on Saturday and 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Its opening follows that of the new H Beauty store in the Lower Town Square area of ​​Metrocentre earlier this month.
