Connecting to Clothing Fuels – Post Bulletin

Jalena Gumban was born in Rochester and, aside from a four-year stay in Iowa, has spent most of her life in the Mediterranean city. Her hobbies include art, singing, cooking, reading and sewing. Jalena recently started modeling for her sewing teacher, Brooke Burch, who owns Vintage Rack and sells a range of vintage clothing and streetwear, as well as handmade designs she calls “wearable art.”

Jalena shares that her love for fashion lends itself to positive impacts when it comes to her social life. “The best part of wearing fun clothes is the people they connect you with, whether they’re strangers, friends, or family members,” she says.

The best purchase you’ve ever made?

My corset belt. It’s basically a waist cincher with a lace-up look in the front. I love it because it works with everything – skirts, pants, buttonholes, etc.

Where do you find style inspiration?

Someone’s style that inspires me is @ebcjpg on Instagram. I love how it mixes vintage silhouettes and patterns with a modern look.

The best second-hand find?

A pink plaid Tripp NYC skirt, or my lovely Miss Me jeans.

The most sentimental item in your wardrobe?

My grandfather’s zipper. I wore it for a year right after he passed away.

Are there certain pieces you own that embody your culture?

I’m half white and half Filipino, and I feel like I embody my culture every time I wear my dad’s Filipino shirt.

What do you think of the Rochester style scene?

I’ve seen people with more eclectic styles lately, but still a lot of cut-and-paste outfits.

The most surprising thing in your wardrobe?

A purple floral Gunne Sax dress.

How does makeup play into your overall look?

I base a lot of my outfits on the aesthetics of my makeup.

Your favorite season when it comes to clothes?

I love fall because I can wear diapers and not die.
