City approves tax breaks for clothing maker LI

HICKSVILLE, NY – A Hicksville-based clothing company will get the tax breaks it sought to buy and renovate a Westbury office building and make it the company’s new headquarters.

The City of Hempstead Industrial Development Agency has approved tax breaks for Maxima Apparel Corp. to purchase and renovate the building, located at 615 Merrick Ave., which was the former headquarters of NYCB Bancorp.

According to IDA, Maxima wants to buy the building for $16 million so it can consolidate its offices, now located in Hicksville and New York. The company plans to use about half of the 78,900 square foot building and then lease the remaining space. Maxima plans to spend $2.35 million to renovate the building. Planned renovations include new plumbing, electrical, communications, IT, mechanical, HVAC, elevators and other building equipment.

“This project is important,” said IDA CEO Fred Parola. “It will modernize an outdated building, bring new jobs from outside the area to Hempstead – a rare occurrence – and offer the prospect of future job growth in our town.”

Family-owned Maxima Apparel Corp. specializes in licensed sportswear and urban streetwear brands. It designs, sources and sells licensed apparel from NBA, MLB, NFL and pop culture personalities. Maxima said it plans to add 34.5 full-time equivalent jobs within two years of renovating the space. It already employs 33 people.
