It’s been four years since Los Angeles-based Set Active launched with a quality activewear line that could take wearers from morning to night.

Lindsey Carter started her brand with the idea of creating activewear that would be perfect for the gym, on a coffee break, at work and then at home. For versatility, styles are done in solid colors meant to make the pieces easier to mix and match with other garments.

Once the brand started to take off in 2020, Carter considered opening a store where customers could check out the fabrics that were part of the collection. But it took longer than expected due to some things including the pandemic.

But after waiting for the right moment, Set Active opened its first store at 8476 Melrose Place in West Hollywood. The year-long pop-up will showcase Set Active’s core collection, limited drops, and store-exclusive merchandise while previewing 2023 launches before they’re available.

“It’s always been a dream of mine to have a store where people can actually see us in real life because everything we do is community-based,” Carter said.

The 640-square-foot location has a large bench toward the front of the store with Set Active-inspired digital art around the perimeter. A nearby wall filled with Polaroid photos shows customers wearing Set Active. The idea is to integrate the brand community directly into the space.

This is Carter’s first foray into the apparel business. Previously, she had her own business advising clients on how best to optimize the use of social media. But she was also looking at her own gym clothes and sensing that something was missing.

“While wearing it, I felt like I had to either work out or do some kind of activity,” she said. “I felt like it wasn’t something I could just wear on the go.”

A look inside the store. Photo courtesy of Set Active

The fabric is an important element of the label, which is made in China and Los Angeles. Carter has developed proprietary fabrics including SculpltFlex, the brand’s compression fabric for high impact workouts. It is seamless and has strategically placed ribs to expand and contract with the body. There’s LuxForm, which is soft and has a smooth, sleek look. The newest addition is SportBody, a fabric that aims to wick away moisture using breathable compression.

The brand is also known for its ever-changing limited edition drops that veer away from seasonal trends, and once they’re gone, they’re gone for good. Set Active also offers a basic collection available all year round. This assortment is renewed each year in their growing range of sportswear, sweatshirts, basics and more. This year, the company introduced outerwear.

The label prides itself on being community-based and adapting consumer ideas into its products. “We’re introducing a community collection, which is chosen by the community, and that’s what’s going to be in stock all year round. And then it will be taken up every year by the community,” Carter said.

For the store opening, its customer community was front and center with a line at the door to peek inside.

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — Avid runner and Iron Man triathlete Mohnish “Mo” Wadhwani of Basking Ridge is used to rising before the sun and training 8 hours a day in extreme temperatures.

His family and friends affectionately call him a “monster” for his dedication to physical fitness.

But for Wadhwani “adopting this lifestyle transformed me as a person and gave me healthier habits that influenced my family and friends”.

“I thought, if being a ‘monster’ can inspire and improve so many lives then – absolutely I am a monster!” Wadhwani said.

This revelation led Wadhwani to ask his fashion designer wife Noor to quit her successful corporate career to open Athletifreak – a sportswear and luxury clothing brand. She was completely taken in.

Wadhwani had been a corporate executive for places like Honeywell, Johnson and Johnson and others for 12 years.

“My children were 3 and 1 at the time. I was afraid of giving up my corporate career with small children. I kept going back and forth,” Wadhwani said.

Then at the end of 2019, he said to himself: “it’s now or never”.

The COVID pandemic delayed the opening of Athltifreak but the couple were finally able to launch in February 2021 at their Basking Ridge home.

Wadhwani described the brand as the “perfect collision” of his professional and athletic background and his wife’s creative and fashion experience.

They started with five products using custom-designed fabrics and have since grown to 120 products sold in 47 states and five continents.

Now they are set to open their first outlet at the Bridgewater Commons Mall, 400 Commons Way, Bridgewater on the second floor near the Atrium.

The grand opening will take place on Friday from 5-7 p.m. with Bridgewater Mayor Matthew Moench cutting the ribbon.

“We’re super excited,” Wadhwani said. “My wife and I put in love and energy. Our blood, sweat and tears. That’s what it’s all about. With that, we’re blessed.”

Wadhwani said that the whole premise of Athleticreak is that greatness lies within.

“The athlete spends endless hours developing and training when no one is watching so you can succeed when the lights are on. That’s why we say greatness lies within,” Wadhwani said. . “It’s about your weird passion. Light pulse energy. We all have that in us.”

Collective Will has moved and more than tripled its space.

Collective Will’s elevated thrift store, located in Vancouver’s historic Dominion Building, has been given new life.

The micro-boutique occupied a 225 square foot suite in the converted office building when it opened in December 2021, sharing space with local brand R Denim after a year of exclusive e-commerce.

After R Denmic left, Collective Will took over the whole sequel with a collection of women’s clothing and accessories, but after almost a year in the space, owner Randa Salloum is literally stepping up.

The store remains in the Dominion Building, a stone’s throw from Victory Square on West Pender, but has moved to the 14th floor and nearly quadrupled the space.

“This move has helped me accommodate a larger selection of inventory, as well as an electronic communications studio that will facilitate the online clothing shopping portion of the site, which should be completed before the holidays,” said Sallum at VIA.

In addition to a larger selection of second-hand clothing, Salloum has introduced a selection of Canadian-made products.

Just before the move, Salloum began offering custom framed street photography prints by local artist Sabrina Fenster AKA Street Scout.

Fenster scours the world for the most fashionable people and moments and Salloum has selected six of his favorite photos from the Street Scout archives available to order in the store.

Salloum also stocks Melissa Araujo, a Brazilian jewelry designer. The collection (minus two products) is made of recycled mixed metals and Solloum says the new additions were a huge hit on opening night earlier this week. “I chose my favorites from her collection that complemented the clothes in the store,” she explains.

In addition to jewelry and photography, Collective Will positions itself as a lifestyle hub with candles from Toronto’s The MMW Lab and personal care beauty products from Bowen Island’s Sangre De Fruta brand.

“I chose their two personal scents (toning spray and oil roller) to be the perfect finishing touch for any outfit,” says Salloum and the candles are hand poured and inspired by decades and old movies. and Hollywood fashions and are only available in Vancouver from Collective Will.

Rounding out the beauty offering are six shades of colorful vegan nail polish by Montreal’s BKind.

We tick all the year-end boxes very quickly. Halloween has come and gone and for most of us we have gone straight to Christmas.

It’s never too early to start your holiday shopping and if the weather continues to fly by, Christmas will be here before you know it.

There have been a limited number of stores to buy toys for the past few years and if you like to venture into stores to buy your gifts, it can be very difficult to find what you are looking for.

Luckily for us, Toys “R” Us opened in Macy’s stores across the Garden State just in time.

Eugene Gologursky

Eugene Gologursky

When I was a kid, Toys “R” Us was the ultimate toy store. I remember sitting on the floor in the living room going through the holiday catalog and circling all the toys I wanted Santa to bring me.

There’s an app for that now, but there’s definitely a sense of nostalgia when it comes to shopping there.

While they have some of the same toys you can find at Target or Walmart or any other store selling brands like Hot Wheels, Nerf, Barbie, and Fisher Price, they also have some exclusive items relating to the holiday season.

Toys “R” Us closed all of its locations in 2018, but the partnership with Macy’s began in 2021.

They have now reopened in 400 Macy’s stores across the country and 18 of them are in New Jersey.

The opening of the Nike Unite store at 910 Ellsworth Dr. in Downtown Silver Spring appears to have been delayed to 2023, according to signage posted at the storefront.

The previously announced November 3 opening date has also been removed from the store’s Google listing.

We originally announced in June that Beaverton, Oregon-based Nike would open a downtown Silver Spring outpost of the company’s Nike Unite concept store, which was announced in late 2020. “Nike Unite Exists to serve and celebrate the people of each local community, and each store is designed to reflect their hearts and minds,” the company said in a statement. “Consumers are greeted by an in-store community wall featuring showcasing the store team and local partnerships, and design elements throughout the space also seek to tell the story of the community. From local landmarks to local athletes, the design allows local residents to feel represented in the space.

The Downtown Silver Spring store is part of Nike’s plan to open 200 stores in the United States and Europe. Stores, which offer digital technology – such as self-checkout through the Nike app and in-store pickup for online orders – will play a key role in Nike’s direct-to-consumer efforts.

Nike CEO John Donahoe originally announced the store plan during the company’s 2020 quarterly earnings call. “I would characterize this investment in these new doors as an ongoing investment in our digital future,” said Donahoe. “With soft goods like clothing, they may want to reserve it online and try it on in store. They may want to be in a store and buy something that’s not in the store due to inventory, and the “associate uses a digital device to purchase it and get it shipped home. And so consumers increasingly want a consistent and seamless physical and digital experience, and so that’s what we’re committed to delivering.”

According to Business Insider, new stores are planned in Louisville, Kentucky; Lexington, Kentucky; Liverpool, England; Harlem in New York; and Fresno, CA, in addition to the downtown Silver Spring location. Nike employees posted on social media saying stores will open in Washington, DC, New York’s North Bronx and near Salt Lake City.

PoPville reported the Nov. 23 opening of a Nike Unite store in the district’s H Street corridor; another location recently opened in Fairfax, Virginia.

Nike officials did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

Is the future of Kohl’s Corp., based in Menomonee Falls, Wis., in Tacoma, WA?

More experimental than ever, Kohl’s has created a “concept” store in Tacoma that reimagines and modernizes the retailer’s physical experience.

The 35,000 square foot setting – much smaller than Kohl’s typical 80,000 square foot box – has set a soft opening for this Sunday but officially opens Nov. 4.

Potentially, Tacoma could be the prototype for future stores, and elements of it could be applied to existing stores.

“In this digital and physical world, the bar has been raised. We must provide ease and convenience while providing innovation and discovery. This store is a big manifestation,” Kohl’s General Manager Michelle Gass said Thursday afternoon during an online tour of the concept store.

“A 35,000 square foot box is the model we are looking to grow. We see 100 more stores in our future.

“But above all, this store is still a concept – an experience. That’s not how we decided to go to 100 stores yet,” Gass explained. “We have a working model” for the smaller stores that will be rolled out. “We actually have several of those working in terms of experience and economy, and then that [Tacoma] is to take a blank sheet of paper, put the customer first, use analytics and data, and say, “We’re designing a store from the ground up.” So what is possible? »

Walking through the concept store, Gass called the setting “very open and very modern.” Floors are polished concrete, and it’s possible to move fixtures and racks to a greater extent than in existing traditional Kohl racetrack layouts across the chain. Flexible editing means it’s easier to expand or contract brands and categories based on sales trends. Tacoma’s fixtures have an overall more modern look, and displays and shelving are also updated, with branding now at eye level.

With the assortment, “it has all the great stuff we’re known for but edited out,” Gass said, citing Sephora, which has a smaller space than it would have at Kohl’s other locations. As she has repeatedly pointed out over the past few months, Gass said Sephora “works for Kohl’s” and that by next year it will be in 850 Kohl’s stores, and eventually all 1,100 stores. Kohl. Sephora is currently present in approximately 600 Kohl locations.

Gass pointed out that Kohl’s used data to create “a highly localized experience” in Tacoma and an assortment characterized by a more focused assortment of outdoor gear, such as Columbia and Eddie Bauer.

In the concept store, “The way we walked through the store is different,” Gass said. “In front is the women’s area flanked on both sides. True to that market, it’s all about the active, outdoor lifestyle, so because it’s fall, you see fleece, you see flannel, and you see family apparel.

“You hit customers with product the moment you walk in,” Gass said, noting that the checkout area has been moved to put merchandise front and center.

“It’s about inspiration and storytelling. Our customers have told us, “I’m running out of time. I want solutions. Help me put together outfits. We mix brands. It’s not a head-to-toe brand.

“We’re using more dummies,” Gass added. “You will see it throughout. Please note, we have flesh-colored mannequins and mannequins of all sizes.

In May, the company revealed plans to open about 100 small-format stores over the next five years or so in markets untapped by existing Kohl’s stores. The expansion of small-format stores follows a successful pilot project of more than 20 smaller stores, the company said. The average Kohl’s store of around 80,000 square feet is considered too large for many small markets.

“The real estate team has already identified what those markets might look like,” Gass said. “We have a store concept that works today. It is a more modernized version. The Tacoma store is just a huge step up, with a lot of things experimental, like self-checkout, how we do it at home, and whether customers like our active, outdoor-inspired “hallway.” »

While smaller stores are key to future expansion, Gass said she sees no need to scale back existing Kohl stores across the country because they are very “cash-generating and healthy.” Instead, the focus would be on adding additional concepts to the 80,000 square foot space. “There’s a pipeline of innovative ideas the company is working on to make stores more relevant,” Gass said.

“We’re in a big reinvention when it comes to Kohl’s, and it’s about starting with the customer, positioning the company to be a leader in the active-casual lifestyle,” Gass said. “Across many principles of our strategy, thinking differently about experience is an important part of this transformation strategy. We’re doing a lot across the store to reflect the new strategy of the active, casual lifestyle.

While the casual and active chain-wide and online push channel started in 2020, Tacoma’s concept store took about a year to build and get up and running. “We really challenged ourselves,” Gass said. “We’re going to learn a lot from this strategy that will inform new stores going forward. [and that we can take] back to our very robust fleet.

In addition to the reduced square footage, most striking is the increased use of mannequins and the more sophisticated display of private label and national active, casual and outerwear brands, such as with the “hallway” format, for telling style and trend stories and showing outfits to encourage multiple purchases, much more openly than Kohl’s usually does.

“The active, outdoor hallway, a real manifestation of location, the outdoor lifestyle, with Columbia, Eddie Bauer, Nike, Under Armour, Adidas, everything for the family, and even the merchandising of adjacent things like bags of sleeping, it’s all data-driven,” Gass said. “We’ve been working hard on creating a scalable model, getting that outdoor, active amplification in this particular store. If this new concept was in the South, you’d see something very different displayed in the hallway, probably a lot more shorts, swimwear, tank tops, summer-oriented products. It’s really about fostering relevance, inspiration, and ease of purchase.

“Brands are really chosen based on what that customer is buying,” Gass said. “In women, customers were attracted to our private labels, such as SO and Sonoma, which stands for Nine West, which is a big brand for the company, which we don’t have in this store. This was the thought in every department of the store. It’s much more organized in both product types and brands based on customer ideas.

The checkout is no longer in front, but to the side, making the merchandise the first impression upon entering the store. Kohl’s is testing self-checkout in concept, while having associates run the checkout.

“The look and feel is quite different from how we usually make payment,” Gass said. “This is the first Kohl’s store where we’re putting the checkout area not in the front but actually on the side, so customers can walk right into the product.” Because Tacoma is a relatively small, open store, “it won’t take long for customers to see the checkout area,” Gass said. And the self-checkout, she added, “has the latest hardware and software.

“There’s a lot of experimentation that’s so essential in the store,” Gass said. “This is a bold step forward for Kohl’s. You feel like you’re seeing Kohl’s, but it looks and feels different in a good way. We will change things as we learn from the customer.

In other innovations, the reception area has a product showroom experience. Product thumbnails are visible throughout the floor, and customers can purchase the entire thumbnails directly from their phone via a QR code.

Tacoma’s concept store also features “Discover at Kohl’s,” a store featuring dozens of emerging brands, established and owned by various newcomers to the retailer, and already in 600 locations and on kohls.com.

To create the concept store, Gass said the company brought in an exterior design firm “in the beginning. … But it was really a team from Kohl that brought it to life in the totality that you see here.”

When asked how long it would take before deciding whether to roll out the concept or scrap it, Gass replied, “Sometimes if we see it working right away, we could scale it faster, I think. that with something like this it will take a bit of time while we tweak and iterate. There will be a lot of testing and learning. I really consider it a learning lab for Kohl’s.

Asked if, per square foot, the costs to recreate the concept store in other locations would be greater than what it takes to expand the traditional Kohl’s store, Gass said, “At the end of the day, if we had to evolve all of this, you can assure us that we will have a great return for the company. We’re always flexible about how long we test things.

In addition to the new concept store in Tacoma, Washington, Kohl’s will open three small-format stores in San Angelo, Texas this fall; Morgantown West Virginia and Lenox, Massachusetts.

Kohl’s is under pressure to reduce sales and declining profits and looks to this holiday season to regain market share, and for some recently implemented strategies to kick off and resonate with buyers, including adding of its Sephora beauty stores. The second quarter saw a 63% drop in second quarter revenue and an 8.5% drop in sales.

For months, shareholder activists have been questioning strategies and demanding changes in leadership and board composition. However, Tacoma’s concept store reflects Kohl’s drive to change, step up its innovation efforts and become more relevant to consumers.

Syracuse, NY – An entertainment store that left Destiny USA a decade ago is back.

FYE (For Your Entertainment) recently opened in a 4,500 square foot retail space on the mall’s first floor.

Dubbed “a premier pop culture destination for the whole family,” FYE sells collectibles, apparel, candy, plush, home decor and other branded items. Marvel, Star Wars, Pokemon, Squishmallows, Funko and Naruto are some of the popular brands shoppers will find at FYE.

“We’re thrilled to bring customers a fun shopping experience in the mall where they can find the latest anime everyone’s talking about or the latest vinyl album,” said Jodie Evans, FYE’s Merchandising Director, in a press release announcing the opening. from the Syracuse store.

Albany-based FYE, then owned by Trans World Entertainment, expanded in 2001 after it bought out and rebranded mall stores. But in 2012 the company closed its Destiny USA store in Syracuse and in 2018 closed its Great Northern Mall store in Clay. The company also closed a number of other stores around the same time, blaming a drop in mall traffic.

FYE now operates nearly 200 stores nationwide and hopes to continue to expand the FYE brand to more locations, Evans said in the release. The company also aims to “satisfy customers’ need to touch, hear and experience products before they buy,” according to its website.

The newest FYE is located in the old FootAction space next to Buckle in Destiny USA.
