Our Christmas Parade is this Saturday, and after a Thanksgiving party and football game on Thursday, followed by “shopping till you drop” on Friday, you’ll probably want to take some time out before heading to the parade more late Saturday. Here’s something you can do earlier on Saturday that can make a big difference: shop small.

The Saturday following Thanksgiving became a holiday called Small Business Saturday. It was created several years ago by American Express, in partnership with the National Trust Historic Preservation, to direct consumer traffic to small businesses. While Black Friday was all about big-box stores and malls, and Cyber Monday (the following Monday) is all about e-commerce, Small Business Saturday is the time for you to think small. independent retailers, many of which are part of our town centres.

Ave has many small businesses that can help you get your holiday shopping started. Previous columns and articles have been devoted to bringing to your attention many of these businesses, as well as the retail clusters of which they are a part. Whether it’s jewelry, clothing, electronics, collectibles, antiques, crafts, records, furniture, books, or a wide assortment of other items , you can find them right on The Ave. For a list of retail stores on The Ave, visit our website theave.biz.

The good thing about shopping small is that you are helping in many ways. You are helping small retailers, your friends and neighbors, who have struggled through the tough economic times of the past two years. They give you the personalized treatment that you don’t often get in department stores. You are a name and not just another generic customer. You can also avoid the traffic, long lines and bustle of big box stores and malls. A downtown is the heart of a city and it’s a great way to make our downtown, The Ave, your destination.

So head to The Ave early this Saturday and think big by buying small.

Our Main Street Vineland Christmas Parade will take place on Saturday, November 26 starting at 5 p.m., with the rain date the next day at the same time. The theme of the parade will be “A Fireman’s Christmas”. Main Street Vineland will honor the City of Vineland Fire Department as it celebrates its 150th anniversary. The title sponsor will be Friends of Michael Testa Jr. for the State Senate and Newfield National Bank will be a sustaining sponsor.

A friendly reminder that if you and your loved one are planning to get married, you won’t want to miss our Weddings on The Ave promotion, sponsored by Al’s Shoes, taking place all this month. I mentioned last week all the wedding-related businesses on The Ave that are ready and willing to help you make that special day even more special. Check out the promotion and make The Ave your destination for all those needs, especially on Small Business Saturday. not

Black Friday, traditionally the busiest shopping day of the year, is set to begin on Friday, November 25 this year. As consumers prepare to take advantage of the deals and discounts on offer, the rising costs of many products due to inflation and supply chain shortages can have an effect on buying behavior. Instead of raising the alarm in brave crowds for deeply discounted items, dedicated shoppers can search for deals online, which often allows for more flexibility to buy compared to the best price. With an increase in consumer spending on online purchases, the Better Business Bureau reminds shoppers to stay aware of scammers who tend to capitalize on market trends.

Every year, BBB Scam Tracker receives an influx of reports during the holiday shopping season from consumers falling victim to fraudulent sellers, counterfeit items, or misleading advertising regarding product quality. Scammers often appeal to shoppers by offering massive discounts on brand name products under the guise of a Black Friday deal, often including product photos that do not reflect what the customer is receiving.

Last year, BBB issued a warning about a Fort Worth-based company that was selling products that appeared to be Beats by Dre headphones, but numerous customer complaints described the poor quality of the product. The company itself leveraged the credibility attached to the brand by calling itself Beats by Dr. Dre, confusing consumers who thought they were getting a bargain on a product known for its quality. Although the website operated by this company has since been taken down, scammers often use this tactic for a variety of other products. BBB’s 2021 online shopping scam report found that shoes and clothing are the most common counterfeit items, with Nike being the most frequently used brand. Other top brands include NFL apparel, Apple gadgets, Louis Vuitton handbags, Tiffany jewelry and LEGO toys.

If you decide to shop on Black Friday, the Better Business Bureau offers these tips to make your shopping experience productive, scam-free, and successful.

Make the most of Black Friday deals. Start with a list of items and use sales flyers and promotions to determine which store has the best price. Set a budget and stick to it before you go.

Read the fine print. Some retailers may offer an additional percentage on the purchase, but exclude specific offers or items such as “patio doors”. Watch for companies with a high percentage discount; the item may be “75% off”, but the retailer may inflate the original price. Check price tags, terms and conditions carefully. Research online using a secure Wi-Fi connection to see if competitors are offering the item at a better price.

Plan the trip. Sometimes you don’t have to wait to see what deals retailers have on Black Friday; often they release Black Friday flyers weeks in advance so consumers can plan their shopping spree. Make a map of which stores to visit and what items are in which store. Some retailers only honor sale announcements during a specific time period or on certain days, and may limit the number of deeply discounted items available for purchase.

Sign up for our email alerts. Many stores are offering their best Black Friday deals and exclusive coupons to people who have subscribed to their emails. Subscribe before the holiday season, then unsubscribe afterwards, if necessary.

Do your research. Read product reviews on deeply discounted items. It could be an advertised cheaper model or brand and not what the buyer expects. Check BBB.org for store company profiles and read what other customers have experienced.

Consumers expect quality from things like shoes, clothes, and jewelry. When researching a popular brand or luxury item, pay close attention to its price and check with official retailers to determine the likelihood of it being offered at the advertised price. If a product is listed at significantly higher prices at authorized retailers or on its website than stated, it is more than likely not genuine.

Read the website and look for grammatical errors. Typographical errors indicate that the site was created quickly and may not reflect the typical brand message you would expect. Grammatical errors in public-facing communications are rare for branded articles that typically have the resources to employ extensive marketing departments.

Know the return policy and warranty information. Pass any information about returns, exchanges, repairs and warranties to the person who will use the item. Gift receipts are an easy way for recipients to return or exchange a gift if it’s not fair, but make sure the gift recipient can return the item before purchasing.

ABOUT POPPI’S SEEDS MARKET

Poppi Seed Market was established in 2019 by a mother-daughter team as a pop-up market offering local artisans the opportunity to share and sell their wares and build relationships with their community. We hosted the first-ever Merry Maker Pop Up Shop in 2020 at Tustin’s Marketplace to create a safe yet festive shopping environment during the pandemic. Our creators had such a great time that we decided to add it to our event schedule as an annual holiday event.

Grassroots Outdoor Alliance (www.grassrootsoutdoors.com), the national organization dedicated to the health and growth of specialty outdoor retail, announces year-to-date sales figures ahead of its upcoming trade show. Grassroots Connect purchase, scheduled for November 7-10, 2022.

Based on key revenue data provided by retail members, Grassroots Group sales figures increased 8.2% year-to-date compared to 2021, which was a record year for the whole of the group. With 102 independent outdoor specialty retailers representing 222 outlets, the group’s overall growth in 2022 included a strong first quarter (January-March, up 10.1%), a slightly slower second quarter (April- June, up 5.6%) and a booming third quarter (July-September, up 9.5%).

“The upcoming Connect show couldn’t be better timed, as it will set the stage for critical conversations about the challenges and opportunities in specialty retail right now,” said Gabe Maier, President of Grassroots Outdoor Alliance. “It’s certainly satisfying to see how some retailers continue to thrive as we navigate the end of the pandemic, but it’s also important to have direct discussions about how broader market forces are creating specific barriers to trade. Retail. The way forward is communication, early and often, to make sure we are all working together.

At Tahoe Mountain Sports (Truckee, Calif.), owner Dave Polivy reported year-to-date gross sales growth “in the range of 5%,” which matched numbers from the Grassroots Group. However, its subdued sales growth is being thwarted by a problematic financial picture of lower margins and tighter cash flow due to significant inflation in shipping costs and payrolls (“The excitement around sales is good, but caution is on the side of the profit margin”). He also called oversupply “the scariest” of all the challenges his company is currently facing.

“The overall outlook for the fourth quarter is cautious, but not apocalyptic,” Polivy said. “We are refining our selection and reducing orders in the belief that there will be plenty of stock availability in January if we need it. The concern is that these vendors will cut prices over the holidays and ignore their own MAP policies which would be absolutely devastating as any selling action will directly impact margins which are already squeezed due to payroll pressures and shipments.

At Kristi Mountain Sports (Alamosa, Colo.), manager Raleigh Burt said his store’s performance this year was well below the Grassroots group average as the “unsustainable pace” of 2020-21 returned to levels of before the pandemic. Burt commented on the tremendous headwind from negative consumer forces — such as high gasoline prices, a slowing stock market and MSRP increases — as well as significant inventory issues, particularly in durable goods. Still, he remained optimistic, saying his company’s overall financial situation was “still strong”.

“Our plan for 2023 is to be cautious about our purchases, as we expect sales to continue to decline slightly. Our shelves are full with one to two years of certain products, and it is natural to expect deep discounts next year, as brands will find their warehouses overcrowded, which means the last thing we want is to accept more inventory now that will lose value when it’s time to sell it next spring. sellers have their eyes open to what’s to come,” Burt said.

At Trail Creek Outfitters (Glen Mills, Pa.), owner Ed Camelli reported sales numbers well above the Grassroots Group level, thanks in large part to the dominant lifestyle apparel and footwear categories in his product selection. Camelli said he was enjoying the return of in-person shopping in his community, which is largely driven by a core of “loyal, local” customers, and had four of the biggest months in his 39-year history. store in 2022, with particularly strong growth in September and October (+29%).

“What does the crystal ball say? There has certainly been a lot of talk about major retailers overstocking and asking suppliers to break the MAP. And that judgment may come, but so far we haven’t seen it,” Camelli said.

HOUSTON, TX (KTRK) — Now that the Astros are in the World Series, let’s talk about fashion.

We want our team to be sharp and ready, and we can only thank one company. Bonus: they are local.

Martin Tailors, located at 4712 Feagan Street, is a family business that has been serving the Houston area since 1957, and ABC13 was able to meet with them ahead of Game 2.

We got to see the official elite jerseys that the players will wear during the World Series.

The white jerseys are for home games and the grays will be worn for away games when the Astros travel to Philadelphia on Monday.

And we’ve seen what they consider the fan-favorite jersey: the bright orange unit.

This week alone they received the official World Series crests which will be sewn onto each team member’s jersey.

The store owner says each jersey is custom made for the players. He also notes that third baseman Alex Bregman likes his cut a little closer to the body than other teammates.

The tailors worked on Hall of Fame jackets and their new business, making custom women’s dresses from Astros jerseys.

We know the Astros look great, but what about fan fashion?

Recently, ABC13 host Rita Garcia sat down with proud Houstonian, Ellyse Espinoza, and talked about her burgeoning company, State Line Designs, which makes clothes for fans.

Espinoza said her most popular t-shirt with the printed words “You’re still mad” was a joke between her and a friend, and now she can’t keep it in stock.

She said she originally started the business to empower and inspire women. And that moment came full circle when some of the Astros’ wives wanted to place an order.

“I think that was my home run because I started my brand to meet the needs of women originally. I wanted women to wear match day clothes and not feel like, ‘ I have to wear a man’s shirt.’ That’s why I created State Line,” Espinoza said.

Game 2 of the World Series is scheduled for 7:03 p.m. at Minute Maid Park on Saturday.

With only four teams remaining for the 2022 International Finals weekend (TI11), the venue is expected to change from SunTec Singapore to the Singapore Indoor Stadium. However, despite the location change, Valve’s annual Secret Shop will be available throughout the weekend for on-site and online purchases. For those unfamiliar with The International (TI) Secret Shop, it is a store where Dota 2 fans can purchase TI merchandise as well as official Dota 2 apparel.

However, this year there are two main methods for Dota 2 fans to purchase said merchandise.

The on-site secret shop will be available during the weekend of the finals

For those wishing to purchase Dota 2 merchandise during Finals Weekend Live at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, the Secret Shop is available on-site at the venue. However, attendees will need to order their items online as the store does not allow on-site purchase of items that primarily comply with Singapore’s COVID-19 regulations.

However, attendees can purchase their items online and pick up their purchased items on site after placing their order. Attendees must have an event badge in order to enable on-site pickup as this allows them to identify the buyer accordingly. The exact location and more details about the store during the TI11 Finals will be revealed before the weekend.

People attending the event can purchase their items from the eClubStore website and pick up their items themselves at the event.

For Dota 2 fans watching the event online this year, Valve has teamed up with several retail partners to make new Dota 2 merchandise available in all regions.

For China, Valve has partnered with Taobao for its own online version of the Secret Shop this year to allow Chinese fans to purchase items online. The website can be found here.

For other regions, Valve has partnered with We Are Nations as an official online merchandise partner. Additionally, the site offers products that are not otherwise available to the secret shop on site, such as the Ogre Magi line of products and more.

The online shopping site can be found here.

While these are the two official sources for purchasing Dota 2 merchandise, some teams also sell their own team merchandise across Singapore, such as BOOM Esports and Alliance, from pop-up stores in Funan Mall.
