The cardigan

One of my favorite clothes is the cardigan. There are several reasons why they are endlessly versatile: they come in all lengths, yarns, knitting/crochet patterns, colors and more. They can be the perfect reflection of your mood, a fantastic accessory, the ultimate comfort item, and if you’re a Swifty, they’re an obvious must-have.

But let’s get back to why they’re the perfect transitional garment for fall. During the summer, when most of us spend our time in tank tops, cardigans are a saving grace when it gets windy or the chilly nights outside start to get to us.

Once it starts to come in the fall, however, they really take center stage. As the days get colder, they look great over a t-shirt, blouse, and even a button-up. They’re great for lounging around the house, they’re school dress code friendly, and they look great on everyone! They might even be your next crochet or knitting project.

The set in two parts

I’ve been waiting for this moment for three months now. Finally, the leaves started to line up with the accent colors of a shirt I was looking forward to wearing.

Fall presents an interesting challenge. His days are temperate and beautiful. But dare to step outside and you’ll either be scorched by the sun or frozen by the tundra winds. Fortunately, the company presented us with a versatile solution for all occasions: a t-shirt and sweatpants.

The sweatpants are the easy part – I just pick randomly from my floor or my drawer – but the T-shirt is a whole different matter.

My shirt of choice is actually the one I stole from a friend – the Curbside branded ‘Roasting Raccoon’ shirt, designed by Mandy Heck. Something about this shirt – a raccoon roasting a marshmallow by a campfire – really spoke to me, so I bought one for myself. Heck’s design also works well with the season, given that it exudes a sense of calm and relaxation.

Last month, Jayton Metcalf stood in a booth at the Rosedale Mall and showed off items from his clothing line to a few potential customers. I was walking through the mall with my daughters when I saw it and asked about his clothing company, Blind Havoc.

His sweatshirts feature messages of positivity, including phrases such as “Ignore What’s Negative” and “Love Your Neighbor”. During the pandemic, the 22-year-old designer said he decided to do his part to bring some light to the people around him when interaction became more restrictive.

“Once the pandemic put an end to that, I was just trying to figure out what I could do in quarantine to still try to spread a positive message,” Metcalf said.

It was a Midwestern moment as we started talking about his vision. Not only do we have similar last names, but he mentioned that his father is Rob Metcalf, a former Gophers men’s basketball player. I knew his father’s name from my time on the Gophers beat over a decade ago. Someone should do a study on the mutual ties we all seem to have in the Twin Cities.

I am always fascinated by young people who are innovative and ambitious. He too was intentional.

Metcalf, a business marketer at the University of Minnesota, said he was volunteering in north Minneapolis with Volunteers of America when the pandemic eliminated those opportunities. Some of the young people he had worked with had been listed as at-risk cases.

During his time with these students, however, he learned that they were misunderstood. They were kids who were mostly looking for a connection. Although he discussed academics with them, he mostly tried to build relationships.

Without that outlet in the pandemic, Metcalf had plenty of free time.

He used it to advance his clothing line. But he didn’t know where to start, so he studied YouTube videos to learn. Then he paid $200 to get his first batch of t-shirts and he was ready to go.

“That’s when I discovered how to start a clothing brand and I continued to research it,” he said. “Besides, I wanted it to feel positive. It was a message that I thought was most true for myself. Growing up in a family where no matter what, my parents always insisted, ‘Be always nice to everyone and try to include everyone.'”

However, he first needed a name for his new brand. He said he wanted a name that would illustrate what has seemed so difficult to do in recent years. “Blind Havoc” is a name he created to send the message that there is nothing wrong with moving forward in chaos.

He invested in the kiosk last summer and his business has grown ever since. Even Suni Lee, the Olympic gold medalist, bought one of his sweatshirts. The brand’s Instagram account has nearly 8,000 followers.

The buzz impressed Metcalf, but it was the impact that was most touching.

He’s heard of people who have gone through a number of hurdles during the pandemic — divorces, financial issues and depression — and bought one of his items because of his post.

Metcalf said she recently heard of a mother who bought one of her t-shirts and gave it to her son who was struggling with mental health issues.

“I just got this email the other day and it’s a much better feeling than selling a bunch of stuff,” he said. “Posts where people let me know how Blind Havoc has helped them in a small way or affected them in a positive way…that’s the best feedback.”

I sometimes assume that our reactions in these uplifting moments are sporadic and short-lived.

After a message makes us smile, cry or laugh, where do we take it? This has been one of the most difficult elements in recent years. Hard to know what will stick. I bought a sweatshirt from Metcalf to support him. And when I got home, I kept looking at the message: “Ignore What’s Negative”. It made me feel something.

I wore it the next day and a few days later wore it again while dining at a local restaurant with my youngest daughter. As we were finishing our meals, I felt someone’s hand on my left shoulder. My back was turned so I had no idea who hit me. I’m usually more suspicious than inviting in these cases.

Then a gray-haired woman stood next to me and smiled. “I like that message on your sweater,” she said. We didn’t become friends. We did not clap hands or arms.

But it was an acknowledgment of something, perhaps a glimpse of what we can be if we can navigate the ominous signs around us and believe in something brighter.

“The last few years have been really tough for people,” Metcalf said. “I feel like I have the ability to help shift their mindset a bit, more towards the positive light.”

The best purchase you’ve ever made?

My corset belt. It’s basically a waist cincher with a lace-up look in the front. I love it because it works with everything – skirts, pants, buttonholes, etc.

Where do you find style inspiration?

Someone’s style that inspires me is @ebcjpg on Instagram. I love how it mixes vintage silhouettes and patterns with a modern look.

The best second-hand find?

A pink plaid Tripp NYC skirt, or my lovely Miss Me jeans.

My grandfather’s zipper. I wore it for a year right after he passed away.

Camden and Boonville Police Departments have issued a warning against buying fraudulent t-shirts using their patches and branding.

Boonville police officials said they received a number of complaints from residents who received a text message advertising a Boonville Police Department hoodie for $10 off. The hoodie features the Boonville Police crest and other police iconography, along with the phrase “Everyone is created equal but only the best are served in the Boonville NY Police Department”.

“At no time have I or anyone else authorized to do so authorize any person or persons to use our Boonville Police Department crest for any non-law enforcement purposes,” warned the responsibles.

“Needless to say, the Boonville Police Department does not have any hoodies or other apparel for sale at this time.”

Camden Police officials said they saw a similar scam, with t-shirts and hoodies bearing a similar slogan, with the name changed to match the Camden Village Police Department. The scams came through text and Facebook Messenger, officials warned.

Both police departments said the ads are unofficial and likely a scam, and not to order the clothes offered.

For decades, the concept of wearable art, where clothing was used as an expressive artistic expression, was often too expensive or completely impractical. Clever clothes were reserved for a small part of the population.

But designer Katrin Leblond believes that clothing and design can be an art that should be accessible to all women. “I believe women can be disruptors,” says Leblond, whose Montreal boutique is full of bold, playful and unique prints and is consistently voted one of the city’s top designers. “I operate in an industry with a distorted perception of value because of fast fashion,” she adds. Most people who buy art like to know the artist, but most people who buy clothes don’t know the seamstress who sewed it or even the person who designed it.

Known for her unique and dynamic designs, Leblond began her career two decades ago as a textile designer. In 2007, she launched her own brand, Catherine Leblond Design, and her own boutique, Boutique Katrin Leblond. Textile artist, the inspired talent of Leblond is present in his creations.

“I love folk art, patterns, flowers and bright colors. I like yellow, orange, pink and turquoise,” explains Leblond, who starts each garment with a brush. “I like to be a visual extrovert in the way I dress. I think that makes up for my shy nature. I don’t have much to say with words, but I have a lot to say with colors and patterns.

Leblond also collaborates with other female artists on printed designs. Last year she worked with Ukrainian artist Daria Hlazatova. Creating across cultural and geographic boundaries, their theme was brotherhood.

“The concept of brotherhood is really important to me. I work with women, I serve women, and almost all of my clients are women,” says Leblond. “Women have a way, across generations, of uplifting each other. We impact each other’s moods, we compliment each other, we cry and we heal together. We share moments of joy and intimacy. All of these things happen all the time in my store.

Growing up in Montreal, Leblond remembers his early drive for creativity, craftsmanship and even entrepreneurship. “I remember having a little stand at the end of my grandmother’s driveway where I sold the stones that were clearly visible in the driveway behind me,” she shares. “I got dressed, put flowers in my hair and sat under an umbrella. People bought them. I loved making money when I was a kid.

Her first foray into producing creative products was making Fimo (a kind of polymer clay), jewelry, not clothes. At 13, Leblond had his own booth at a community Christmas craft sale. “It was funny because when they wanted to make a purchase, people asked me where my relative was and I had to explain to them that it was my stall and they had to pay me,” she recalls.

Studying fine and studio art at art school, she found she had a disconnect with the school’s underlying mission. “It was really difficult for me because they expected us to have a big concept for our artwork,” says Leblond. “I just wanted to do beautiful things. Things I could use, things I could wear.

Leblond’s early work was very fanciful. “I made tops with dragonfly wings and skirts that looked like upside-down tulips,” Leblond explains. “It didn’t sell very well.” Now she tends to make practical, easy-to-wear garments with feminine silhouettes and bold prints. “Things for everyday life and everyday joy,” she adds.

The big joy for Leblond is the design process. “It’s the journey from doodle to garment: a print is developed, colors are changed, scale is tested, and it becomes a magical envelope for a woman’s body,” says Leblond. In fact, she likens the process to cooking. “You can take rotten bananas, eggs, flour, butter, and milk and turn them into chewy, aromatic banana bread or dry, unattractive bread. There are so many steps to getting it right,” she suggests. “I like it because it’s tough and I’m good at it.”

Eighteen months ago, Leblond and everything she has built was put to the test when her store and workshop were hit by a major fire. She lost most of her inventory and had to move overnight. “These moments always make you wonder if you want to carry on,” she shares. Now would have been the perfect time to let go and do something else.

Leblond knew in her heart that she wasn’t done with her business. But she was determined to rebuild in a new way. “I didn’t want to compromise anymore. No need to sell me short anymore. No more choosing cheap materials just to keep things affordable,” she shares. That meant going ahead with organic cotton, colorful linens, and all the quirky prints. It meant starting over. “It meant more work and hustle like a 20-year-old,” she says.

Like a phoenix rising from its ashes, since the fire, Leblond has imagined two collections, built a new store and got back on its feet. And she is inspired to go even further. “I want to be the Marimekko of Canada, a design house that represents originality, artistry and local pride in the textile market,” she says as she launches a wholesale collection for Spring 2023. “I believe there are women who crave creativity – expression and I want them to know they are not alone.
